A wide range of private specialist services are available here at the Portobello Clinic. A team of distinguished consultants cover most areas of medical and surgical specialty to provide in-house appointments, as well as minor surgery, ultrasound scanning and bone density scanning at the clinic.

Appointments for private specialist services must be booked through the Portobello Clinic administration team, and must be accompanied by a referral, usually from the patient's regular GP. With the exception of minor surgical procedures, ALL appointments are payable at the time of consultation. We will provide full assistance with the completion of any insurance claims once payment has been received by the clinic.

Specialist Profiles

Cardiology

Dr Richard Carroll FRCP

Dr Carroll graduated from Sheffield University Medical School in 1990, where he was awarded the Gold Medal in Clinical Medicine and Clinical Surgery and the Prize Medal in Paediatrics. Thereafter, he studied post graduate general medicine on the regional rotation around the Merseyside teaching hospitals where he quickly gained MRCP. He was then appointed as Cardiology registrar in the West Midlands Deanery, where he continued his training.

In 1997, he took a three year sabbatical to complete his PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of London His research interest was the role of the mitochondria in reperfusion injury of the Human Myocardium.

He returned to complete his sub-specialist training in interventional cardiology at the University of Birmingham and was appointed as Consultant Cardiology at Northwest London Hospital and St Mary's Hospital, Paddington in the summer of 2003.

Dr Carroll extended his training to ensure dual accreditation in both General Internal Medicine and Cardiology, making him unusual in this respect. This unique expertise ensures Dr Carroll can see the whole spectrum of emergency medicine illnesses, not just from the perspective of that of the interventional cardiology. His current research is focused on the molecular mechanisms of myocardial injury and its prevention, newer imaging modalities in the assessment and management of myocardial infarction and the optimization of the management of Ischaemic Heart Disease.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Dr Robin Hart MSc MA DPsych

Having originally taken a degree in music followed by a successful career as a musician, Robin returned to London University and took an MSc degree in Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapy and an MA degree in Psychoanalysis. He followed this with a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Therapy and completed his Doctoral studies in adapting existing treatments and identifying new treatments for anxiety disorders and depression. Robin subsequently joined the Psychology team at HMP Wormwood Scrubs in 1997 working clinically and researching the efficacy of treatment on the prison population. Following this he returned to private practice in 2002. He is registered and accredited with the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy, the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy and the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. He has a particular interest in working with a range of anxiety disorders and depression, family and relationship problems.

Dermatology

Dr. Jonathan M. L. White B.Sc.(Hons), M.B., Ch.B., MRCP(UK)

Dr. White trained in medicine at the University of Manchester and the Universität des Saarlandes (Germany), having dual accreditation via the European Credit Transfer Scheme. He then studied postgraduate medicine in a variety of hospitals in London and at the Medizinische Hochschule, Hanover, Germany. His specialist training in dermatology took place at King’s College Hospital, Ealing Hospital and at St. John’s Institute of Dermatology (including one year as a clinical fellow in Cutaneous Allergy). He has been the recipient of prizes by the Royal Society of Medicine, St. John’s Dermatological Society, the British Association of Dermatologists and was awarded the Dermatology GlaxoSmithKline fellowship in 2005.

Dr. White is a Consultant Dermatologist at the St. John’s Institute, at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals in London. Having completed general dermatological training, as well as sub-specialty training in skin allergy, he is interested in all aspects of dermatology from acne, psoriasis, mole checks and skin cancer through to rarer conditions. He has a particular research interest in conditions such as eczema, allergic contact dermatitis, urticaria, angio-oedema and medication allergy. Dr. White has published widely in medical journals and is an associate editor of ‘DermClips’, a journal established by the American Academy of Dermatology, as well as regularly reviewing articles for journals such as Allergy and Clinical and Experimental Dermatology. He is an internal examiner for the M.Sc. Clinical Dermatology course at St. John’s Institute. Consultations are also offered in French or German.

Ear, Nose & Throat

Professor Antony Narula MA FRCS FRCS Ed

Tony Narula is a consultant ENT surgeon at St Mary's Hospital, London and an honorary professor at Middlesex University  He qualified from Cambridge University in 1979.  He was trained in London and the Midlands and was a consultant in Leicester until 2001 when he moved to London

His expertise is in general ENT and especially in children's problems along with ear and hearing disorders.  He has published numerous scientific articles and contributed to 6 books and book chapters.  He is also an elected Council member of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Gastroenterology

Dr Colin N Macdougall MB ChB FRCP

Dr Colin Macdougall is a Consultant Physician & Gastroenterologist with 25 years experience. He trained in Rhodesia , the UK and Australia and has also worked in Saudi Arabia and Zimbabwe Since returning to the UK in 2002, Dr Macdougall has been working at the private Rood Lane Medical Group in the City and he consults at the London Bridge Hospital , The Princess Grace Hospital and the City of London Medical Centre He has extensive experience in General and Tropical Medicine, Gastroenterology and both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. Dr Macdougall's particular interests include gastro-oesophageal reflux, dyspepsia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and screening for colorectal cancer.

Gynaecology

Mr David Hodgson MBBS DRANZCOG DA( UK ) FRANZCOG CCST (RCOG) CCST (RACGP)

Mr Hodgson graduated from Monash University ( Melbourne ) in 1983 and has been practicing in Obstetrics and Gynaecology posts since 1986. Specialist trained in the UK (Southwest and Wessex region) and has 20 years of NHS reproductive medicine experience as well as 8 years of IVF experience. Special interests and training include; infertility, Key Hole surgery, prolapse surgery, modern management of problem periods and the menopause as well as surgical treatment of incontinence.

"Early training as both a remote Australian GP, sports medicine doctor and in anaesthetics I feel gives me a "whole person", approach to patient care".

Minor Surgery

Mr Simon Harris BSc MS FRCS

After training at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and South West Thames surgical region, Simon gained a Diploma in Laparoscopic (keyhole) Surgery at the Louis Pasteur Institute of Telesurgery, University of Strasbourg , France.

Following further specialist training in the Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Units at Addenbrookes, Cambridge , and St Thomas 's Hospitals, he completed a Senior Fellowship teaching Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit (MATTU) Guildford , the largest unit in the country entirely devoted to the teaching and training of other surgeons.

Simon is a member of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons and is a Consultant Surgeon at Mount Vernon and The Hillingdon Hospital, West London He is also part of the West London Cancer Network, routinely performing operations for abdominal cancer. Apart from the keyhole surgery for the treatment of gallstones, hernia, and acid reflux, his special interests include endoscopy and colonoscopy in the investigation of abdominal problems, and all aspects of abdominal and general surgery.

Mr Christopher Chan BSc (Hons), FRCS (Gen Surg)

Mr Chan graduated from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas 's Hospital, London in 1991. He did his surgical training in London and Cambridge , gaining his fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons in 1993.

Mr Chan was also awarded a MRC Clinical fellowship researching into pelvic floor dysfunction. He carried out further sub-specialist colorectal training with fellowships to Sydney , Paris and St Mark's Hospital, Harrow He was appointed Senior Lecturer/Consultant at Barts and The London NHS Trust in 2004.

Mr Chan is actively involved in teaching and lecturing at all levels including MB BS, MRCS, Intercollegiate FRCS examinations and Royal College of Surgeons courses and is an organiser of MRCS revision courses. He is an invited lecturer at national and international conferences, and is a MB BS examiner for Queen Mary and Imperial College London. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of general surgery and coloproctology and is part of an active research department.

Mr Chan has a broad experience in general surgery with special expertise in the management of colorectal cancer, complex inflammatory bowel disease and anorectal and pelvic floor problems.

Neurology

Dr Paul Jarman MA PhD FRCP

Paul Jarman is a Consultant Neurologist based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgey in Queen Square and at University College Hospital. He trained at Oxford and London Universities before completing research and a PhD in molecular genetic aspects of movement disorders. He is interested in all aspects of clinical neurology from treatment of headache to the management of more complex neurological disorders. He has specialist interests in Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, use of botulinum toxin to treat post stroke spasticity and is involved in inpatient neurorehabilitation. He is also interested in medical education and is neurology Training Programme director at Queen Square.

Orthopaedics

Mr James Youngman MBBS, FRCS (Tr + Orth)

James Youngman graduated from University college Hospital London in 1990. He gained the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1993 training in Whipps Cross. He completed his specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Royal London Hospital rotation gaining specialist training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital , the Royal London Hospital and University College Hospital He has a special interest in Hip and Knee reconstruction, deformity correction, trauma reconstruction and foot and ankle surgery. His Consultant NHS appointment is at University College Hospital and he operates Privately at the Princess Grace Hospital , the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth and the Wellington hospital.

Mr Richard Sinnerton FRCS(Orth)

Richard Sinnerton graduated from St Thomas ' Hospital in 1988 and trained as an orthopaedic surgeon on the West London circuit based at St. Mary's. His passion for shoulder surgery started when he worked in Nice for a year as Fellow to Prof. Boileau probably Europe 's leading shoulder surgeon. He has developed a world wide reputation in the use of Reverse Geometry shoulder replacement for the treatment of severely arthritic shoulders and also has a special interest in Frozen Shoulder.

He combines the best of the new technology and procedures with the tried and tested to achieve the best possible results for his patients.

Paediatrics

Dr Sarah El-Neil   BMedSci, MBChB, MRCP, FRCPCH

Consultant Paediatrician and Adolescent Physician

Dr El-Neil  graduated from the Godfrey Huggins School of Medicine, Harare , Zimbabwe in 1986 having spent a childhood between the UK and overseas travelling with parents working for the World Health Organisation. Her Paediatric training started at Guy's Hospital, London and was completed at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge She has held Specialist Registrar posts in various Paediatric sub-specialities and was Clinical Lecturer in the Paediatric Academic Department of the  Medical School , Cambridge University Her research interests were in Paediatric Endocrinology, Respiratory Medicine and  Liver transplantation. Her NHS Consultant post was In General Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at three sites: University College Hospital , The Middlesex Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital She has published on the assessment and management of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She has been in Private Practice since 2003 and, exclusively so from 2004. She has consulted at the Portobello Clinic from May 2007.

Podiatry

Louise Jackson BSc (Hons)

Louise graduated in Edinburgh in 2000 and since then has practiced in all aspects of Podiatry.  She is currently studying for her Masters and is training with a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon at Northampton General Hospital to become a foot surgeon. She has a wide range of experience in the management of complex foot conditions and biomechanical abnormalities from working in the NHS and private.

Louise is able to administer steroid injections and diagnostic local anesthetic injections. Her special areas of interest are pre and post surgical assessment of the foot, disorders of the foot secondary to Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes and musculoskeletal abnormalities which may be due to inefficient biomechanical function.  Louise is interested in sports injuries and is a keen runner herself.

Psychiatry

Dr Marios Pierides MB BCh BA MRCPsych

Dr Pierides graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 1982. He joined the Guy's and St Thomas 's rotation in Psychiatry and obtained his Membership in 1991. He was appointed Consultant Psychiatrist in 1994 at the South London and Maudsley (NHS) Trust. He has examined in the MRCPsych Part II examinations and has been appointed to the General Medical Council's Fitness to Practise Panel. He is Clinical tutor at the Capio Nightingale Hospital , Lisson Grove, London His interests are in all aspects of General Adult Psychiatry, and especially in the management of psychoses, affective disorders, and in the psychotherapy and psychopharmacology of the severe mental illnesses.

Psychotherapy

Tanya Haynes - BA (psychol), PG dip, Adv PG dip, UKCP
Systemic Psychotherapist


Tanya initially worked as a Counselling Psychologist and subsequently as a Senior Psychotherapist for thirteen years for a NHS Trust. She now works full time in private practice, both at The Portobello Clinic and The Group Analytic Practice. She works with individuals, couples and is a qualified Family Therapist. Particular areas of specialisation are child and adolescent mental health, anxiety, eating disorders, self harm, relational difficulties and issues around low self esteem.

Radiology

Dr Adrian Lim MD FRCR

Dr Lim graduated from Nottingham University Medical School in 1995 and completed his Radiology training at the Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals , London gaining Fellowship to the Royal College of Radiologist in 2000. After a period of research he obtained a Doctorate in Medicine from Imperial College London with a thesis on the use of microbubble enhanced ultrasound and magnetic resonance in assessing chronic liver disease. He is now a Consultant Radiologist at the Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust and is Head of Ultrasound at Charing Cross Hospital His main interests and experience include Ultrasound, CT and MRI particularly of the abdomen and pelvis as well as musculoskeletal and breast imaging.

Professor David Cosgrove

David Cosgrove graduated in Medicine from Oxford University and St George's Hospital London in 1963 and went on to obtain Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1970. He worked as Consultant in Nuclear Medicine at the Royal Marsden Hospital and began working in Ultrasound there when the subject was in its infancy. His MSc was a comparison of the two techniques in the liver. He was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Radiologists by invitation. In 1995 he was invited to head up the ultrasound unit at Hammersmith Hospital which has grown to become a world recognised centre. He retired in 2004 and is now Emeritus Professor at Imperial College and part time Consultant in Radiology at Hammersmith Hospital

Dr Chris Harvey BSc MB BS MRCP FRCR

Dr Chris Harvey qualified from Charing Cross Hospital and Westminster Medical School in 1989, went on to train in radiology at the Middlesex Hospital , and became Consultant Radiologist at Hammersmith Hospital in 2001. He is now head of ultrasound at Hammersmith Hospital He has published widely in many aspects of ultrasound. Dr Harvey's special interests include ultrasound of the abdomen, carotids, prostate as well as contrast imaging.

Mrs Nayna Patel DCR (R) DMU MSc

Nayna is a qualified Sonographer and has been working in ultrasound for 17 years. She trained as a Radiographer at Hammersmith Hospital and gained the Diploma of the College of Radiographers in 1980. Her interest in ultrasound led her to undertake further training at Queen Charlotte and Hammersmith hospitals and she gained a Diploma in Medical Ultrasound in 1990 and MSc in ultrasound from City University in 1997.

She is the Superintendent Sonographer at Hammersmith Hospital and has vast experience in general abdominal, gynaecological and obstetric ultrasound. She holds the certificate in Nuchal Translucency Scanning issued by the Fetal Medicine Foundation. She has been involved in a number of research studies involving novel techniques in the use of ultrasound contrast agents in chronic liver disease. She also lectures on and teaches aspects of various ultrasound topics.

Rheumatology

Dr. Thomas Palferman MB. BS. FRCP. MRCS. DCH. DRCOG.

Dr. Palferman graduated from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School , University of London in 1971. His specialist training was completed at Westminster , St. Thomas 's, St. Bartholomew's and Whipps Cross University Hospitals , London He holds an NHS consultant post at the East Somerset NHS Foundation Trust where he has held all the senior representative and executive posts, including latterly that of hospital governor.

Nationally, Dr. Palferman has been chairman of Clinical Affairs Committee, Council and Executive member of the British Society for Rheumatology, an expert adviser to NICE, scientific adviser to the National Osteoporosis Society, honorary treasurer to the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance, a member of the Arthritis Research Campaign's publications working group, is a past-president of the section of rheumatology at the Royal Society of Medicine, and examines for the higher diploma MRCP at the Royal College of Physicians, London and is on the Council of the Independent Doctors Forum.

He has a major interest in osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases and his NHS unit won the prestigious Hospital Doctor Osteoporosis Unit of the Year Award.

He has helped set up comprehensive clinical osteoporosis services, supported by a state-of-the-art DEXA scanner, at the Portobello Clinic.

Dr. Palferman is involved in clinical research, has presented original work, lectured and represented British rheumatology at major academic meetings in the U.K., Europe, U.S.A., Middle East and Japan. Urology

Mr Bijan Khoubehi BSc(Hon) MB BS(Hon) MD FRCS(Urol)

Bijan Khoubehi is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He qualified at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1994. Following basic surgical training, Bijan carried out his urological training in London. Having completed his general urological training, he undertook two fellowship years in Urological Oncology at the Charing Cross Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital. He was awarded an MD thesis for research into the role of developmental genes in prostate cancer. He treats patients with general urological conditions and has a special interest in Uro-oncology including nerve sparing radical prostatectomy, radical cystoprostatectomy and ileo-orthotopic bladder substitution. He has also been trained in laparoscopic surgery and performs laparoscopic procedures for kidney cancer. He has been awarded a British Urological Foundation scholarship for Robotic Surgery.
